It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Legally Blonde strutted into theatres and changed the cultural conversation around what it means to be smart, ambitious, and unapologetically yourself. Released in 2001, the film didn’t just give us endlessly quotable lines and iconic pink ensembles. It introduced a character who proved that femininity and intelligence are not mutually exclusive. Elle Woods didn’t just get into Harvard Law. She rewrote the rules.

Over the years, the movie has only grown in stature. It spawned a sequel, a Broadway musical, and now, a brand-new generation of fans thanks to an upcoming prequel series and a long-anticipated third film still in development. Legally Blonde remains a touchstone for audiences who see themselves in Elle’s determination and heart.
With the film returning to theatres nationwide May 24 & 27, we’re checking in with the cast to see where their lives have taken them since their days at Harvard Law.

Reese Witherspoon didn’t just play Elle Woods. She became synonymous with the character. And in the years since, she has built one of the most impressive careers in Hollywood. Following Legally Blonde, Witherspoon continued to balance commercial hits with critically acclaimed roles. She won an Academy Award® for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line (2005) and later earned praise for films like Wild (2014). But her impact extends far beyond acting.
With her production company Hello Sunshine, Witherspoon has become a major force behind female-driven storytelling. Projects like Big Little Lies (2017) and The Morning Show (2019) have dominated both award conversations and streaming charts. She has also built a massive book club that consistently turns novels into must-read hits.
And yes, Elle Woods is still very much part of her story. Witherspoon has confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is still in the works, emphasizing her commitment to getting the story just right. Even more exciting, she is producing the upcoming prequel series Elle, which will explore the character’s high school years and premiere in 2026.

Portraying Emmett Richmond, Luke Wilson delivered one of the most charming and grounded performances in the film. Emmett was the rare romantic lead who admired Elle for exactly who she was. Wilson entered Legally Blonde already known for his collaborations with filmmaker Wes Anderson, including Bottle Rocket (1996) and Rushmore (1998). After the film, he continued to build a steady career across both comedy and drama.
He appeared in popular films like Old School (2003) and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), while also taking on television roles in series such as Enlightened (2011) and Stargirl (2020). Over the years, Wilson has maintained a consistent presence in Hollywood, often choosing character-driven roles over blockbuster fame.
While he has kept a relatively low profile compared to some of his co-stars, Wilson’s work remains reliably strong. And for many fans, he will always be the guy who believed in Elle Woods before anyone else did.

Selma Blair brought surprising depth to Vivian Kensington, transforming what could have been a one-note rival into a fully realized character who evolves alongside Elle. After Legally Blonde, Blair’s career flourished. She starred in films like The Sweetest Thing (2002) and the Hellboy franchise, showing her range across comedy and action. On television, she delivered memorable performances in projects like The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016).
In 2018, Blair revealed her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, and she has since become an advocate for awareness and accessibility. She also shared her journey in her memoir, Mean Baby, offering an honest and deeply personal look at her life. Blair has continued to act while navigating health challenges, proving that her resilience rivals that of any character she has played.

Every great story needs a foil and Matthew Davis played Warner Huntington III with just the right amount of charm and obliviousness. After Legally Blonde, Davis transitioned largely into television, where he found lasting success. He became widely known for his role as Alaric Saltzman on The Vampire Diaries (2009), a character he played for years and later reprised in the spin-off Legacies.
Davis has built a career defined by consistency and fan-favorite roles. While Warner may not have appreciated Elle Woods, audiences have certainly appreciated Davis’s ability to bring memorable characters to life.

Jennifer Coolidge nearly stole the movie as Paulette, the lovable manicurist with a heart of gold and a gift for comedic timing. Coolidge enjoyed a long career in comedy before and after Legally Blonde, with roles in American Pie (1999) and numerous television appearances. But her career reached new heights in recent years thanks to her Emmy-winning performance in The White Lotus (2021).
Her portrayal of Tanya McQuoid reintroduced her to a new generation of viewers and earned her widespread critical acclaim. Suddenly, Coolidge was everywhere again, from awards shows to high-profile film roles. Fans will be happy to know that she is expected to return for Legally Blonde 3, because let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be the same without Paulette.

Victor Garber brought gravitas and complexity to Professor Callahan, one of the film’s most controversial figures. Garber has long been one of Hollywood’s most respected character actors, and his career has only continued to grow since Legally Blonde. He has appeared in major films such as Argo (2012) and Titanic (1997), as well as television series including Alias (2001 – 2006) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016 – 2022). Known for his versatility, Garber seamlessly moves between stage, film, and television. His ability to elevate every project he joins has made him a consistent presence in the industry for decades.

Holland Taylor delivered one of the film’s most powerful moments as Professor Stromwell, offering Elle the encouragement she needed to keep going. Taylor has enjoyed a prolific career on stage and screen. She is perhaps best known for her role on Two and a Half Men (2003 – 2015), but her work spans everything from theater to prestige television.
In recent years, she has appeared in series like Hollywood and Mr. Mercedes, continuing to showcase her range and authority as a performer. Taylor remains one of those actors whose presence immediately elevates any scene.

Ali Larter’s Brooke Taylor-Windham proved that you can defend yourself in court and still maintain a killer workout routine. Following Legally Blonde, Larter became a staple of early 2000s genre films, including the Resident Evil series. She also gained a devoted fan base through her role on the hit TV series Heroes (2006 – 2010).
Larter has continued to work steadily in both film and television, often gravitating toward strong, action-oriented roles that highlight her screen presence.

As Margot and Serena, Jessica Cauffiel and Alanna Ubach played Elle’s loyal best friends, providing both comic relief and unwavering support. Cauffiel has appeared in various film and television projects, including White Chicks (2004), Guess Who (2005), and My Name Is Earl (2006 – 2007), though she has largely stepped back from the spotlight in recent times.
Ubach, on the other hand, has remained incredibly active. She has built a strong career in both live-action and voice acting, lending her talents to animated series and major studio films. Her versatility has allowed her to thrive across genres and formats.

Though her role was relatively small, Linda Cardellini made a lasting impression as Chutney Windham, delivering one of the film’s most memorable courtroom moments.
Cardellini’s career has soared in the years since. She has appeared in everything from Freaks and Geeks (1999 – 2000) to ER (1994 – 2009), and more recently, she earned acclaim for her work in Dead to Me (2019 – 2022). She has also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Laura Barton in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), proving her ability to move between indie projects, prestige television, and blockbuster franchises with ease.
25 years later, Legally Blonde is more than just a beloved comedy. It’s a cultural landmark. The film continues to inspire audiences, and its message feels just as relevant today as it did in 2001.
With a prequel series set to introduce a new generation to Elle Woods and a third film still in development, the story is far from over. The cast has gone on to achieve remarkable things, from Oscar® wins to Emmy victories to personal triumphs off-screen. Yet they all share a common legacy: they helped create a film that continues to empower, entertain, and remind us that being yourself is always in style.
And honestly, what could be more iconic than that?
