Normally when someone says they’ve got the “ick” it means something negative. Today, Collider having the “ick” is anything but as it unveils an exclusive look at the trailer for Joseph Kahn‘s Ick, a horror comedy releasing nationwide by Fathom Entertainment on July 27-29. The film stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim), Malina Weissman (Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty, American Pie). In Ick, a vine-like growth known as “The Ick” has crept into the lives of those who call Eastbrook home. That is, until a mutual suspicion held by science teacher Hank (Routh) and student Grace (Weissman) that the Ick is far from the harmless entity that people have been ignoring for two decades. Other cast includes Harrison Cone, Debra Wilson, Taia Sophia, Zeke Jones, and Jeffrey Fahey.

No One Got “The Ick” When Signing Onto Joseph Kahn’s ‘Ick’

Ick premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. At TIFF, Collider’s Steve Weintraub sat down with cast members Routh, Suvari, and Weissman, as well as director Joseph Kahn to talk about bringing “the ick” and the film, to life. Kahn explained to Collider, that while it’s billed as a horror comedy, Ick, is “kind of everything at a certain level. It’s a fun ride, it’s a roller coaster, you know. I make no apologies about it. We made a roller coaster film on purpose.” Routh chimed in agreeing that the film is a “fun ride” and said, “The most interesting part of it was working with Joseph because, I thought, with this script and the work that I’d seen from him, that was all I needed to see to go on a journey.” Weissman said “I feel like I speak for all of us when I say that we’ve never worked with a director like Joseph.” With Suvari agreeing, “I feel [Kahn]’s absolutely brilliant and genius.”

Kahn’s special blend of horror comedy will also feature true millennial nostalgia with music from American Rejects, Paramore, and Blink 182. When talking about packing all the hits in, Kahn says he “called on every favor I could.” This was especially true of including a song from Blink 182. “That’s a personal request, that’s a personal thing. You can give them all the money in the world, and they won’t put their song in a movie. The fact they did it, and they gave it for such a friend’s and family rate. It was a nice piece of validation.”

Ick releases in theaters nationwide July 27-29. Watch the trailer above. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
