Have Valentine’s day plans yet? This year, you can spend the holiday reliving the essential ‘80s romantic comedy “Pretty in Pink,” which Paramount Pictures and Fathom Entertainment are bringing back to the big screen in celebration of its 40th anniversary. The special release will also include a bonus featurette with the film’s director Howard Deutch and will have nationwide showtimes from Feb. 13 through 16.
Since the release of “Pretty in Pink” on Feb. 28, 1986, the coming-of-age comedy has been hailed as one of the most defining films of its time, becoming a classic alongside other John Hughes-written films including “The Breakfast Club,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Sixteen Candles.” Teen icon Molly Ringwald and Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy led the beloved film as Andie and Blane, with memorable supporting performances from Harry Dean Stanton as Jack Walsh, Jon Cryer as Duckie Dale, Annie Potts as Iona and James Spader as Steff McKe
“Pretty in Pink” follows Andie, a high school outcast, as she navigates a complicated romance with Blane, a wealthy heartthrob. It’s a story that’s resonated with audiences of all ages, largely due to how relatable it is; “John’s characters were so true to life,” Deutch told Variety in 2021. “They were not manufactured. They were slices of John and his journey. Whether it’s Duckie, everybody says, ‘I know a Duckie.’ He was so plugged into the humanity of these characters that they endure.”
“For Generation X, ‘Pretty in Pink’ captured the imaginations and hearts of moviegoers, and that legacy lives on today — 40 years later — for movie lovers of all ages” said Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer at Fathom Entertainment, in a statement. “Fathom is thrilled to return the movie to the big screen, newly remastered by Paramount Pictures from a 4K film transfer supervised by director Howard Deutch.”
Tickets for the “Pretty in Pink” 40th Anniversary are available now at Fathom Entertainment and participating theater box offices.
